YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 21+ IN ORDER TO PERFORM AT THE MELODY INN. |
First
We Need A Demo
- Send us something best representative of your current styles and abilities, on any audio format (I'm hoping to one day get a 78rpm or even an Edison wax cylinder...). We prefer CDs, but if not, please send us your cassette tapes or VHS videos.
- The best demos have 3-7 songs, and are somewhat professionally recorded; The mic on a jambox in a garage just doesn't quite cut it. And make sure to put your best stuff first.
We'd Like A Bio
- This is in case we should want to send it out for "The Press". Pictures are cool, but unnecessary.
We need contact information
- The more the better. Work #'s, Home #'s, cell or pager #'s, email addys, anything that can let us get in touch with you ASAP.
- And especially the bands webpage URLs are important to have, because we hotlink our calendar dates directly to your homepages, so people can check out your stuff beforehand. It's a new century, y'know!
Lastly
Give Us Time
- We need time to review the stuff you send us.
We listen to Every Single Demo that we get.
- If we don't call you back right away, don't get anxious or discouraged; we don't necessarily think your band sucks.
What to expect then
- Plan on playing as an opening gig. If you do well that day, then on to headline. The exceptions to this timeline are national acts and local acts whose quality and draw are already known by us and are expected to do well (it is a bar business, y'know...).
After we've scheduled you
- This is when the advertising process begins. We will spread the word thru The Indianapolis Stars Weekend Indianapolis Live! section (for weekend shows, obviously) and the NUVO Newsweekly Soundcheck page. What YOU need to do is advertise on your own as well. The papers listen to us, but sometimes they forget; it's a good idea to do your own pitching too. Besides, how bad do you want to succeed? There have been bands that have played here and not lifted a finger to advertise themselves (no flyering, no word to the media, barely any word of mouth), and then been shocked that no one came out to see them. "Well, Duh!!" If no one is here for your show, then A: you make no money, since you're paid by the cover charge, and B; we sell no booze, and since this is primarily a bar business, our inclination to have you back is severely diminished. So help to PROMOTE yourselves and it's beneficial to us all. You build a bigger fanbase (with all the benefits that implies) and we make money too (which lets me book your band in the first place). And if no one makes money by playing live original music, no one will play it.
So to wrap it up
- Send us a demo, a presskit or bio, thorough contact information, and we'll listen to it, keep it on file, and book you if there's a suitable opening.
- When we book you, help to promote yourselves.
- Have a great show! Or, 'Break a leg,' whatever,... : )
Send that stuff to:
